Step by step for sublimating aluminum license plate blanks, with the settings we use on 100,000+ plates and the fixes for haze, ghosting and dull color.
Sublimated aluminum plates are one of the best products to learn on: the blanks are cheap, the print is forgiving, and a finished plate looks like a real product the first time you get it right. We have pressed well over 100,000 of them in our Phoenix shop. This is the process, the settings, and the mistakes we made so you don’t have to.
Design at the plate’s full size plus 1/8″ bleed on every side (6.25 x 12.25″ for a 6×12). Mirror the image. Print on the coated side of the paper at the highest quality setting using your printer’s sublimation ICC profile. Let the print dry for a minute; wet ink transfers unevenly.
Peel the protective film. Wipe the plate with a lint-free cloth (a little isopropyl if there are fingerprints). Any speck of dust becomes a white dot in the print.
Lay the print face down on the plate, centered with even bleed. Tape two short pieces on the back edges, not across the front. If the paper can shift even slightly you will get ghosting (a faint doubled image). Tape only where the plate has no print you care about, because tape edges can leave a faint pressure line on some coatings.
Our starting point for gloss aluminum plates:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 400°F (204°C) |
| Time | 60-75 seconds |
| Pressure | Medium (firm, not straining) |
| Orientation | Plate face up, paper on top, butcher paper over everything |
Every press reads a little different. Start at 60 seconds and adjust in 5-second steps. When the timer ends, open the press quickly and lift the paper straight up in one motion with gloves on. Do not slide it.
Set the plate on a cooling rack or a clean towel face up. The print is fully set when the plate is at room temperature. Do not stack hot plates; they will mark each other.
For plates that will live on the front of a car in full sun, add a UV-blocking clear coat after pressing (a spray automotive clear works, or a dedicated sublimation UV laminate). It roughly doubles fade life. Let it cure fully before packaging.
Same settings, same process. Small plates press well in batches; you can nest several under one sheet of butcher paper if your press is large enough and the pressure is even. Trim the transfer sheets between plates so the paper doesn’t bridge and wrinkle.
Prefer to skip the equipment? We’ll print it for you, shipped in 1-3 days. Want to do it yourself? The Sublimation Center has the blanks, the settings and the videos.
